Enrollment has closed for Writing to Release Chronic Pain LIVE

But you can still join the self-paced course!

Writing to Release Chronic Pain

This self-paced online course will show you how to release tension and pain from your body and reconnect with your authentic self through expressive writing.

I want in, sign me up!

YES, relief from chronic pain IS possible for you.

If you struggle with chronic pain, I get it. Because I've been there too...

  • The fear of being stuck in the pain cycle forever

Often, the worst part of chronic pain isn't even the pain itself — although that's certainly bad enough. It's the fear of being stuck in the chronic pain cycle forever.

  • The impact on career and relationships

As if dealing with chronic pain isn't difficult enough, there's also the toll that it takes on relationships and career, and the fear that loved ones and colleagues will lose patience.

  • The loss of joy and fun in everyday life

Joy and fun make life worth living. When those are crowded out by chronic pain, it can be difficult to connect with our inner desires and purpose.

Please know this: YOU are not the problem — and there is a way out.

My chronic pain recovery story:

I'm Anna Holtzman and I'm a chronic pain recovery therapist and coach.

I got into this work through my own recovery process from over ten years of chronic migraines. As I found my way from fear to freedom, I discovered this:

I am not broken. And neither are you. Our bodies are just responding to the culture we were brought up in. A culture that has taught us:

  • to ignore our feelings and needs

  • to deny ourselves unconditional love

  • to prioritize serving others and following rules over caring for ourselves

All of these things we were taught are the exact opposite of what our bodies want and need. And eventually, our bodies decided to protest with symptoms like tension and pain.

The Way Forward

If we want to get unstuck from the chronic pain cycle, we need to release our authoritarian programming and get back in touch with our body's signals, so that we can discover our body's desires and tend to its needs.

One of the most powerful ways of doing this is through expressive writing.

I would love to guide you through the teachings and practices that helped me get unstuck from chronic pain, repair my relationship with my body, and find freedom and self-connection. 💖

I'm ready, sign me up!

After taking this course, you will...

  • Have an experiential understanding of how and why your body is trying to protect you by sending pain signals — and how to tend to your body's concerns so that it doesn't have to keep "protecting" you with pain.

  • Have a set of simple and gentle yet effective tools that will help you build trust between your mind and body so that you can begin to unwind the cycle of chronic pain and tension NOW!

  • Feel deeply understood and empathized with. You are not "crazy" or "broken," and you're not alone!

  • Begin to drop the fear of "doing it wrong" when it comes to your healing work — and embrace the inner wisdom that's been inside you all along and that will guide you home to your authentic self and to relief from chronic pain.

So what's included in the Writing to Release Chronic Pain program?

  • 6 Video Workshops

As soon as you register for the program, you'll also have access to pre-recorded versions of each session. These videos don't include group participation; they are ideal for revisiting the sessions at your own pace so that you can repeat the exercises as many times as you want. Each pre-recorded session is roughly 30 minutes and includes a mind-body teaching, two writing sessions and three short mindfulness practices.

  • 2 Months of Group Coaching

You'll get a two-month access pass to the Mind-Body Support Circle, a group coaching membership that meets twice per month! These sessions include powerful sharing experiences with caring and supportive peers who are on a similar path of recovery and who really get it. It's a great opportunity to ask questions and integrate what you're learning. Sessions take place on Thursdays at 12pm ET.

  • Text Versions of All Teachings

You'll get PDFs of all the mind-body teachings and journaling guides so that you can learn and practice at your own pace and style.

  • Support Forum

When you enroll, you'll be invited to join our private Facebook group where you can drop in any time to ask questions and request guidance, and you'll receive support directly from me!

  • Bonus Course: Rx For Flare-Ups

Symptom flare-ups can feel scary and confusing. What if you had a reliable toolkit to help you reduce the overwhelm and guide you through the storm? This short, self-paced course is that go-to toolkit.

  • Lifetime Access!

You'll have lifetime access to the pre-recorded video workshops, so you can go through them as many times as you like!

Here's what we'll be covering in each session...

  • Writing to Release

During this session, you'll gain an understanding of how to use expressive writing as a tool for emotional and physical release, and you'll come away with new insights about what your body is trying to communicate to you.

  • Pain is a Signal

Pain is just the loudest signal in a chain of communication that your body has been trying to send you. In this session, you'll learn how to unravel the chain of signals so that you can get in touch with your body's core needs.

  • Defense Mechanisms

Defense mechanisms are there to protect you, but they can also perpetuate pain. In this session, you'll learn how to de-escalate emotional and physical tension by making friends with your defense mechanisms.

  • Understanding Setbacks

Setbacks are a natural part of the healing journey. In this session, you'll explore a new way to understand them so that you can move through them with greater resilience and ease.

  • Self-Compassion

Have you ever heaved a sigh of relief when somebody finally "got" you and validated your feelings? In this session, you will experience what it's like to offer yourself this same opportunity for emotional and physical tension relief.

  • Completing the Cycle

Healing work is necessary and important. But if you're only ever efforting, and never celebrating and releasing the work, you don't get to integrate your progress and move forward. In this session, you will explore those very things!

Where and when does the program take place?

  • Video Workshop Sessions

All of the 6 video workshop sessions will be made available to you as soon as you sign up for the program. The video workshops are housed online and your unique password will give you access to them for life! So you can go through them at your own pace and schedule, and you can revisit them as many times as you like.

Client Success Story

After working with Anna, my symptoms improved dramatically. In fact, for the first time in a long time, I couldn’t even remember the last time I had a migraine. Perhaps even more powerful for me was that I finally felt like I was “unstuck” and free from my pain.

The biggest change for me is that I am no longer scared of my pain. While I don’t have nearly as many migraines — and when they do happen, they are not as bad — I still have flare-ups. What’s different is that I have the tools to help me get curious about what’s going on and to immediately meet the sensation with self-compassion.

What makes this course different?

  • Tools for emotional connection, not emotional spiraling

You'll learn specific journaling techniques designed to foster self-compassion and understanding.

  • Parts work is built into the process

The journaling exercises will teach you how to open a dialogue between your mind and body.

  • Writing about past trauma is optional, not required

We'll be working with present-time emotions. Revisiting past trauma is welcome if you want to, but it's not required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if this program is right for me?

This program is right for you if...

  • You've been reading my weekly newsletters or follow me on Instagram or have heard me on a podcast and my words have resonated with you.
  • You're open to the mind-body approach and suspect that there's an emotional component to your pain.
  • You're curious about using expressive writing as a tool for mind-body healing and pain relief.
  • You're open to learning how to be more compassionate toward yourself.
  • You're ready to fully participate in the program.

I don't have chronic pain per se. Can this program still help me?

Yes! You can use this work to begin to release any stress-related symptoms, coping behaviors, sensations, etc. such as phobias, insomania, dizziness, tinnitus, fatigue, etc. In other words, any symptom of a "stressed out nervous system" is one that you can work on in this program.

This program is designed to help you unravel the coping patterns that your nervous system has been using to deal with stress, deepen your relationship with yourself, and become your own best ally so that your mind and nervous system can get on the same team and work together more harmoniously.

Will I have to write about past trauma in this course?

No, writing about past trauma is not a necessary part of this course. The style of writing that I will guide you through is about opening a dialogue between your mind and your body, and we'll do that by exploring what you are feeling right now in the present moment. If you feel called to write about past trauma in connection to your present-time feelings, you can but you don't have to. And the writing prompts that I use are designed to help you meet your emotions with self-compassion rather than letting them spiral.

What's the time committment?

The program includes...

  • 6 half-hour video workshops that you can do on your own schedule. I recommend doing one per week for 6 consecutive weeks.
  • Recommended daily writing between sessions for 10-20 minutes.
  • Four optional live group coaching sessions (twice per month for two months.) These sessions take place on Thursdays from 12-1:30pm ET.

When and where does the program take place?

6 video workshops: These are housed online and can be done on your own schedule.

Two months of group coaching:
Four optional live group coaching sessions on Zoom (twice per month for two months.) These sessions take place on Thursdays from 12-1:30pm ET.

Is this a quick fix and can you guarantee I'll be pain free after doing the program?

I totally understand this question, because I've certainly been there on my own pain recovery journey! But if you've come this far, you probably have a sense that quick fixes are not really how chronic pain recovery works. I cannot guarantee that you'll be pain free by the end of the program. But here's what I can say:

If you fully participate, you WILL come away with...

  • A set of simple and gentle yet effective tools that will help you build trust between your mind and body so that you can begin to unwind the cycle of chronic pain and tension NOW!
  • An experiential understanding of how and why your body is trying to protect you by sending pain signals — and how to tend to your body's concerns so that it doesn't have to keep "protecting" you with pain.
  • Feeling deeply understood and empathized with. Knowing that you are not "crazy" or "broken," and you're not alone!
  • A significantly deepened sense of self-understanding and self-trust. You'll begin to drop the fear of "doing it wrong" when it comes to your healing work — and embrace the inner wisdom that's been inside you all along and that will guide you home to your authentic self and to relief from chronic pain.

Do you offer scholarships for this program?

Yes! If you think that you would benefit from this course but the cost is prohibitive for you, you are welcome to request a scholarship by filling out a very brief questionnaire here.

Anna has such a good feel for the connection between mind and body as it relates to physical symptoms. I'm thrilled to have her as a colleague, and my patients who have met with her have been helped immensely. I highly recommend working with her both individually and in her group.
