WHAT IS THE MENTORSHIP?

This is an opportunity to receive my personalized 1:1 support with your chronic symptom recovery while you are pursuing a passion project.

Creatives often think that they need to stop pursuing their passion in order to rest and recover from chronic symptoms.

 

The thing is, passion doesn’t trigger symptoms, fear does. However, chasing our passion can bring on a host of fears, like fear of failing, fear of being seen, fear of criticism... alll those fears.

 

The problem is, if we abandon our passion — the thing that lights us up in life — we actually get plunged into more stress. Because joy and passion are crucial to reducing stress.

 

So, instead of stifling our passion, we need to unpack the fears that are coming up around our passion. And at the same time, we need to stay engaged with the things that feel fun and joyful and replenishing. Including our passion projects!

 

It's not that rest shouldn't be part of our healing plan — we do need rest for our nervous system to heal. But we need to balance it with the things that light us up!

MY STORY

I'm Anna Holtzman and I'm a licensed therapist and chronic pain recovery coach. I'm also a writer and former film/TV editor!

 

I got into my current career through my own recovery process from over ten years of chronic migraines. And my healing journey started when I learned this:

 

Pain is an alarm signal that's created by your nervous system when it senses danger or threat.

 

The danger can be physical, like a broken arm. But when pain is chronic, it's more often something like...

  • fear that we'll get in trouble for expressing our truth.

  • "imposter syndrome" yelling at us to doubt our creativity and worth.

  • perfectionism threatening us with stories of failure and rejection.


The bottom line: I'm not broken, and neither are you. Our bodies are just responding to the culture we were brought up in. A culture that has taught us to doubt our creative intuition and berate ourselves with criticism, creating an environment of chronic nervous system stress. Eventually, our bodies decided to protest with symptoms like tension and pain.


THE PATH TO HEALING

These are the four pillars that are woven through the mentorship program in a way that's personally tailored to you...


  • Pain Re-Education

    Here's what the most up-to-date pain science tells us: Symptoms are distress signals. Just like a baby cries to communicate that it needs something, our nervous system triggers symptoms to communicate unmet needs. When we understand pain’s message, it becomes easier to figure out how to soothe our nervous system’s distress.

  • Emotional Hygiene

    To regulate a stressed nervous system, we need to establish a daily soothe-and-release practice to discharge pent-up emotional stress from the body. Just like healthy gut digestion, healthy emotional digestion requires regular, daily release! When feelings are allowed to surface, we can heal distress by meeting our fear and other emotions with acknowledgment, empathy and love.

  • Reprogram Self-Talk

    Trying to get well by treating yourself as a problem to be fixed does not work. Just like trying to reach creative fulfillment by telling yourself what an untalented failure you are doesn’t work. Self-talk that's guided by imposter syndrome and self-criticism keeps us in a constant state of nervous system stress, so we need to reprogram these habits.

  • Lifestyle Updates

    When we neglect our body’s needs for rest, boundaries, pleasure and fun, our body will stage a protest in the form of symptoms. When we become our body’s ally and advocate instead of its drill sergeant, we start to establish a relationship of trust and open communication with our body, and it no longer needs to pull the symptom alarm to get us to validate its needs.

After working with Anna, my symptoms improved dramatically. In fact, for the first time in a long time, I couldn’t even remember the last time I had a migraine. Perhaps even more powerful for me was that I finally felt like I was “unstuck” and free from my pain.

 

The biggest change for me is that I am no longer scared of my pain. While I don’t have nearly as many migraines — and when they do happen, they are not as bad — I still have flare-ups. What’s different is that I have the tools to help me get curious about what’s going on and to immediately meet the sensation with self-compassion.

  • 6 Coaching Sessions

    You'll have 6 one-on-one coaching sessions with me that are personally tailored to you. Sessions are 50-minutes each and take place on Zoom. You may schedule them monthly, weekly, biweekly or as needed — as long as they fall within the 6-month mentorship period.

  • Email Support

    In between our sessions, you can email me for extra support any time during our 6 months. I am always there to cheer you on!

  • Rx for Flare-Ups Mini-Course

    Symptom flare-ups can feel really scary and confusing. What if you had a reliable toolkit to help you reduce the overwhelm and guide you through the storm? This short self-paced course is that go-to toolkit.

  • My Signature Journaling Course

    Writing to Release Chronic Pain is a 6-module, self-paced course that will show you step-by-step how to release tension and pain from your body through expressive writing. This course combines all the tools I used to heal from chronic migraine!

  • Lifetime Access

    You'll have lifetime access to the online courses, so you can go through them as many times as you like!
